Chuncho Cacao
-
Origin: Grown in the Sacred Valley of Cusco, Peru, particularly in the Quillabamba region (Convención Province).
History: Considered one of the oldest and rarest native cacaos in the world, possibly the genetic ancestor of many modern cacao varieties. Archaeological findings suggest it was used by Andean cultures more than 5,000 years ago.
-
Genetics: Classified as “Theobroma cacao Chuncho”, a wild, indigenous strain. Unlike hybrid commercial cacaos, Chuncho is non-hybrid, pure origin.
-
Flavor Profile: Notes of floral, fruity brightness, often with hints of honey, nuts, citrus, and flowers.
-
Naturally low bitterness and astringency, with a high cacao butter content that makes it creamy and silky.
-
Rarity: Grown in small family farms at high altitudes (400 -1,200 m), in the shade of the Peruvian Amazon. Production is very limited compared to other cacao origins.
-
Spiritual / Ritual Use: Because it is considered “ancestral cacao,” Chuncho cacao is highly prized in cacao ceremonies, connecting participants to the deep lineage of cacao as a sacred plant.
-
Sustainability: Cultivated by indigenous families and cooperatives in harmony with the rainforest ecosystem.
